Michael joined the Financial Services industry in February 1988. He started with a major Insurance company before moving to Guardian Royal Exchange in October 1991 to develop their adviser office in North West London. Michael was a founding Partner of Highwood in December 1992.

Michael has been advising clients on all aspects of wealth management and has over three decades of experience. He specialises in working with high-net-worth clients and helping them to manage their investments. Much of Michael’s time is spent with our professional Partners with whom we work closely to provide financial services to their clients, assisting many firms of accountants and solicitors in complex areas of tax and investment planning.

Michael is often invited to give lectures to Directors at companies on financial planning and was instrumental in creating a series of seminars providing financial education to employees.

We have asked Michael a series of questions:

  • How long have you worked at Highwood? I founded the firm in December 1992, having spent the previous 5 years in tied sales
  • What brought you to the Finance world? I was on the Marks and Spencer Management Scheme and was looking for a new career away from retail. I was approached to join Allied Dunbar. From the very first day I loved the idea of working with clients to help them on their own financial journey.
  • What financial service/ services do you specialise in?  I specialise in managing many of the professional relationships we have with solicitors and accountants who introduce many wonderful clients to Highwood. I also have specialities in investment and tax.
  • What’s your hidden talent or something that most colleagues wouldn’t know about you? I’m a frustrated drummer and wish I’d spent more time learning it when I was younger
  • What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Believe in yourself. Don’t change to please others
  • What’s the most interesting book you’ve ever read or movie you’ve ever seen, and why? I’ve always rated the Shawshank Redemption as one of my favourite movies. I relax by reading historical fiction as I was always fascinated by Roman history and world history from 1936-1945
  • What was your first job, and what did it teach you? Management Trainee at M&S. It taught me that it’s nicer to manage people through mutual respect than instilling a culture of fear.
  • If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be and why? I would love to do a South African safari and a balloon trip along the Napa Valley
  • What’s one item on your bucket list? A European road trip with Suzanne ,stopping at  beautiful hotels and exploring incredible cities

Each month we will be introducing you to different members of our team, if you have a specific question you would like to ask please sent it to enquiries@highwood.co.uk with the subject: Ask the Team.
